This year’s global theme for 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, which begins today on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, is cyberviolence, one of the fastest growing forms of violence against women and girls.
The statistics are alarming:
- As many as 58% of women have been victims of online violence.
- 90 – 95% of deepfake videos are sexual images of women.
- 1 in 4 female journalists and 1 in 3 female parliamentarians have been threatened online, including death threats.
Cyberviolence is not a “virtual” issue. Behind every statistic is a woman or girl whose life has been affected by violence.
We can change this story.
Today, we call on governments to criminalise digital violence.
We call on tech companies to build safer platforms.
We honour the strength of women and girls who deserve to live, work, and speak without fear of violence—online and offline.
And we call on communities everywhere to join us in ending gender-based violence.
Together, we can make the world a safer place for women and girls.
