The Every Woman Fellowship Turns Three!

Three years ago when we launched the Every Woman Fellowship, we didn’t know what would happen. Would activists sign up? Would they find the content engaging? Would it be useful? This summer, as we celebrate the third anniversary of the program, those questions have been answered with a resounding YES!

A total of 385 activists from 61 countries have graduated from the fellowship since the program launched in 2021. This is no small feat for a small team spread across the globe and for activists with jobs and families and at times, shaky internet connections.

Graduates hail from across six continents — Africa, Asia, Latin America, North America and Oceania. This regional representation made each cohort special, allowing fellows to learn from the different experiences and perspectives of their fellow activists.

For the three weeks of each cohort, we met on zoom, discussed the global framework for violence against women and girls in international law, spent time honing and sharing our own advocacy journeys, laughing during mock media interviews and pausing when we needed to because discussing the tragic violence we’ve witnessed or experienced and how we can prevent it is profound work.

The fellowship is free, online, and offers a small amount of funding for those in need of a better internet package to participate — all key factors that have made it accessible to more activists across the world.

Graduates have had an extraordinary impact on advancing the treaty and furthering efforts to end violence against women and girls and gender inequality across the world.

They have:

  • published op-eds,
  • given speeches at the United Nations,
  • participated in diplomatic meetings,
  • held treaty learning sessions, written books,
  • developed television and radio programs,
  • started movements that have received international attention,
  • appeared in the media,
  • founded their own organizations,
  • initiated sign on letters and other advocacy,
  • and more.

In short, they have done precisely what the program is designed to do: Prepare activists to step onto the world stage

The Fellowship began in 2021 with four cohorts and 52 graduates, with Cofounder and CEO Lisa Shannon serving as facilitator. Every Woman Treaty Cofounder Meera Khanna and human rights lawyer Helen Rubenstein led nine cohorts in 2022 (thank you for rising to that challenge!). When I took over in 2023, the program grew to 10 cohorts for the year and 170 graduates. So far this year, we’ve graduated 25 fellows, bringing the total to 385.

This program is a roaring success because of the countless activists who applied for the fellowship program, attended all the classes and completed all the homework. (You should be immensely proud of yourselves. I know I am proud of you!) I’ve been humbled by the trust activists have placed in Every Woman Treaty and the journeys of learning, self discovery we’ve taken along the way.

The Fellowship was made possible thanks to generous funding from Indrani Goradia. Her generosity enabled us to offer this program at no cost to fellows. As the majority of fellows belong to countries where they have little to no access to such advocacy and leadership opportunities, this meant the world to them.

Special thanks to guest speakers Francisco Rivera, Jane Hodges, Yael Marciano, Najla Ayoubi, Ferdous Ara Begum, Shana Samuels, Michelle Hamilton, and Dr. Eleanor Nwadinobi and to Nicolette Gamara and Akefa Raza for technical and management support.

We’re grateful to be part of an extraordinary community of women who have come together to make the world safer for women and girls, everywhere.

Happy Fellowship Anniversary!

What Fellows Say About the Program

I am now part of a collective voice, a global voice, which will have much more positive impact to build the momentum for a treaty to end violence against women and girls.” – Farwa Zafar, Gender Consultant, Pakistan (May 2021)

“It is an absolute honor to be selected and given a platform to learn and contribute to the global treaty to end violence against women and girls, particularly in South Asia. This opportunity has instilled a strong sense of responsibility to positively impact and advocate for protecting women and girls. Moreover, I have gained a lot of knowledge and experience. Thank you for this incredible opportunity and for believing in me.” Kalaiyarasi Sivanesan, Sri Lanka (August 2023)

I have always been passionate about Women and Girls but I did not know how to go about it. I am now able to clearly articulate facts and statistics about VAWG. I have gained media skills at a practical level and I am able to apply them. I have learnt about the regional treaties and how insufficient they are. I have met great women who have empowered me to continue with my work in ending VAWG. I have realized how I have been violated and that I can speak out not just for myself but for others as well.” Oricia Makonda Ngenyibungi, DRC (May 2023)

Meeting other women in the struggle gave me confidence that there is a network out there that one can tap into.” Zynab Binta Kamara, Sierra Leone (Sept 2021)

I find fellowship very useful and holistic. I enjoyed listening to all trainings and materials, either live or after as a recording. I also think it is useful to have this training in the compressed time as you have organized it.” Pille Tsopp-Pagan, Estonia (July 2022)

I find the fellowship extremely helpful. It boosted my confidence immensely. I am ready to make all my unpublished blogs public. I learned the methods which can be used to analyze the problem. I can’t wait to use them at work.” Purimetla Raghavi, India (April 2022)

“It is excellently put together and tailored for online learning — amazing global expertise from all subjects with applicable exercises.” Deborah Alaña Davis, Argentina and Venezuela (April 2022)

“The training was excellent, the fellows eager and informative, and the coordinators friendly, approachable, and fabulous!”Kabahenda Kiggundu, Canada (October 2021)

The community of international women was wonderful. It is my passion to develop a broader global network and work with women from around the world. You chose outstanding women for this program and I will be pleased to keep meeting with them and getting to know them better.” Julie Heifetz, USA (February 2022)

I loved the fact that we had Zainab as our facilitator made all the difference. Having to go through so much information in such a short time is overwhelming, but Zainab’s professionalism,  patience, and understanding of the material, made it possible to stick with it until the end. I love the fact that I got to have access to information I would never have otherwise gotten or even known exists. I also appreciate the homework and breakout rooms to practice. This allowed us to feel how real all of this is.” – Hajah Kandeh, Sierra Leone (February 2023)
